Language Arts 12 Honors
Course Overview:
This Language Arts 12 Honors course offers a rigorous, college-preparatory exploration of British literature, advanced composition, and critical analysis. Designed for motivated high school seniors, this Honors-level English course emphasizes deep reading, analytical writing, and historical context while strengthening students’ communication and academic writing skills. Students engage with influential literary works from the Anglo-Saxon period through Modernism, examining how language, culture, and historical events shaped literary expression. As an Honors course, students complete additional reading, in-depth writing projects, and project-based assessments, applying the 6-Traits of Writing—ideas and content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions—across all written work.
Semester 1 Concepts:
In Semester 1, students study British literature from the Anglo-Saxon era through Romanticism, analyzing how the English language evolved alongside major historical and cultural shifts. Coursework includes close reading and analysis of epics, poetry, drama, short fiction, and essays, with an emphasis on literary themes, author intent, and stylistic techniques. Texts and genres include Beowulf, The Canterbury Tales, Renaissance poetry and drama (Macbeth), Enlightenment essays and satire, and Romantic and Gothic works such as Frankenstein. Honors students complete advanced composition assignments aligned to each literary period, using guided models to develop analytical essays, creative responses, and research-based writing.
Semester 2 Concepts:
In Semester 2, students continue their study of British literature from the Victorian era through Modernism, exploring how industrialization, scientific discovery, and global change influenced literary movements. Students analyze Victorian fiction, drama, and nonfiction—including historical documents and scientific texts—before completing an in-depth study of a British novel such as The War of the Worlds. The semester also includes Modernist poetry and prose from authors like Yeats, Woolf, Joyce, Conrad, and Eliot. Honors-level expectations include extended writing projects, synthesis of literary criticism, and refined application of the 6-Traits of Writing. The course concludes with public speaking and performance, allowing students to present ideas clearly, confidently, and persuasively—skills essential for college and beyond.
